DIY enthusiasts urged to check home insurance
Millions of Britons could be risking a financial blow by failing to check the terms of their home insurance cover before undertaking improvements to their property.
According to research conducted by Confused.com nearly eight million homeowners have undertaken improvement work, having been inspired by TV programmes such as Changing Rooms.
However, of these nearly six million admitted that they have had a DIY disaster, with 600,000 then having to submit a home insurance claim as a result.
Simon Lambie, product director at the site, said the findings, illustrated the importance of ensuring you are covered by your home insurance before starting any work around the home.
He commented: "It is important to look at your home insurance policy to check that you are fully covered, should things go wrong, bearing in mind that most policies will only pay for damage as a result of DIY mistakes if you have cover for accidental damage.
"This being said, it is also necessary to take extra safety precautions, as DIY disasters can cost lives; botched home improvement attempts are already responsible for sending approximately 200,000 people to hospital each year."
