Insurer warns of lighting storm threat
Homeowners have been urged to check their home insurance covers them for lightning damage, as the UK braces itself for unpredictable summer weather.
Halifax issued the warning after research it conducted found that contrary to expectations the number of lightning damage claims is fourteen times higher in summer than it is in the winter.
This is attributable to the high incidence of storm at this time of year, which can cause substantial damage to a home, according to the firm.
Head of underwriting for Halifax Home Insurance, David Rochester, said: "Lightning can strike anywhere, often with little warning, so it is essential to have cover in place so that if the worst happens any cost for repairs or replacement of damaged property will be covered."
The average claim received by the insurer for lightning damage stood at 1,453 last year.
Halifax home insurance covers homeowners for lightning damage as standard under its Home Buildings and Contents policy.
